James William Eldridge was born at Camberwell, Surrey, England the son of James William Eldridge and Mary Ann Hall. James and his sister Eliza Annie were living with their parents at 19 Davey Street Camberwell when the 1881 British census was taken. His father was a dairyman born at Camberwell.
James must have migrated to Australia as on 1 Jul 1915 he enlisted in the Australian Military Forces at Melbourne, Victoria. He was a stoker and he showed his age as 37 and his birthplace as Peckham, London England. He was discharged in Oct 1915 as medically unfit due to a loose body in his right knee joint aggravated by marching. On 20 Aug 1917 he again enlisted at Melbourne, Victoria. He was then shown as a stevedore aged 39½.
On 19 Nov 1917 he married at the Broadmeadows Camp to Violet Lily Myrtle Waters. He was shown as being aged 38 and his father as deceased and Violet as being aged 19. She was born at Port Melbourne in 1898 the daughter of William Garlepp, born in Germany and Sarah Ann French, born at Wagga Wagga NSW. Sarah had remarried in 1903 to Thomas Waters and Violet showed her father as Thomas Waters (deceased) on her marriage.
Violet had a daughter, Iris Myra Kathleen, who was born in 1918. Her birth index record shows her surname as Eldridge however no father is shown. She then had another daughter, Agnes Myrtle Eldridge, who died in 1921 with her father shown as Unknown in the death index record. Violet then remarried on 25 Nov 1922 to David Alexander Walker, son of Alexander Walker and Mary Ann Power. When Violet remarried she was shown as a widow 20 May 1918.
James William was a Private, Service Number 7635, in the 8th Batallion A.I.F. He embarked from Melbourne per A71 "Nestor" on 21 Nov 1917 for England and he marched to the AIF Training Battalion at Sutton Veny on 9 Jan 1918 following his arrival. On 27 Mar 1918 he went absent without leave. On 7 May 1918 a Court of Inquiry was held and he was later formally discharged from the A.I.F. on 1 Apr 1920. No record of his death is known.
James cousin Herbert George Eldridge migrated to Brisbane, Australia on the Ormonde departing London on 21 Aug 1920 accompanied by his wife Rosetta and son Herbert John. Herbert died on 9 Sep 1954 in Brisbane and Rosetta remarried in Sydney on 28 Jan 1955 to Thomas Wright Jeffery.
James half cousin Ernest G J Eldridge, together with his wife and two daughters, migrated to Canada on the Empress of Britain departing Liverpool on 11 May 1956.
Other relatives of James who migrated to Australia include his second cousins Rebecca May Loughlin (nee Lane) who migrated on the Norseman arriving in Victoria in May 1911 with her husband William and their children William John, Albert Edward and Doreen May and Rebecca's sister Florence Maud Parker (nee Lane). Rebecca May died in Sydney, NSW in February 1957 and Florence Maud in East Malvern, VIC on 28 May 1968.
