Richard Frederick Eldridge was baptised on 2 Nov 1834 at Hadlow, Kent, England the son of Stephen and Elizabeth Eldridge. He married Caroline Seager in August 1857 in Kent. They then migrated to Victoria, Australia leaving Liverpool in Sep 1857 on the 1399 ton ship British Trident as part of the major immigration to VIC during the gold rush. The passenger list shows Richard aged 22 and Caroline aged 20 and they arrived at Melbourne on 4 Dec 1857.
They had five children born at Amherst, a goldfield near Maryborough, between 1859 and 1864 with the last child, Amherst, being born on 20 Sep 1864. That birth registration shows Richard as age 30 and Caroline as age 23 with them both being born in Kent.
Richard and Caroline and all of the surviving children moved to England. Richard died in 1867 and Caroline remarried in 1869 In the 1871 census their son Richard was a 12 year old living with his Seager grandparents at Fairfield, Hadlow, Kent and his siblings Caroline aged 10, Elizabeth aged 8 and Amherst (shown as Amos) aged 6 were at the Tonbridge Union Workhouse. By the 1881 census Richard was at High Street, Hadlow, Kent, as a grocers porter married to Fanny. Caroline was a domestic housemaid at 14 Seafield, Hove, Sussex and Amherst was a servant at 61 High Street, Tonbridge, Kent.
Amherst married Emily Vane and they both migrated to Canada on the Lake Manitoba arriving at Quebec on the 19 Jun 1911. They returned to England arriving 14 Dec 1915. Amherst returned to Canada in 1921 on the Metagama and he died in Toronto, Canada on 17 Aug 1925.
